Yuan was born in Sylvarant in The-Village-That-Would-Later-Be-Known-As-Asgard. Despite being a half-elf, who were highly discriminated against, Yuan joined the army and rose to the rank of captain during the Kharlan War. For an unspecified reason, he met with Kratos and the Yggdrasill siblings one day and heard about their ideas for uniting the nations and races peacefully. Yuan thought that Mithos' ideals were naive and that Martel's compassion was depressing, and decided to join them while stating he was doing so to prove these facts to them.
However, he soon began to envy their outlook and started agreeing with their goals. Together, the four of them became angels, gathered the summon spirits, split the countries into their own dimensions, and helped end the war. Somewhere in this timespan, Yuan also fell in love with Martel and at some point before everything hit the fan, the two were engaged. The quartet was planning to use the mana from Derris-Kharlan to revive the Kharlan Tree, which sustained the world and had been almost totally drained by the war. But then a human they had trusted betrayed them in an attempt to capture the mana for themself, and in the struggle Martel was killed.
Mithos launched a plan to revive Martel by using the mana to sustain her soul combined with what was left of the world tree. Yuan helped him and Kratos form Cruxis and the Church of Martel in order to achieve the long-term goal of giving her a new body. But a few hundred years in, Yuan secretly began to disagree with Mithos' new ideals. About 800 years before canon, Yuan founded the underground resistance group the Renegades. Their goal was to stop Cruxis from reviving Martel and to allow the Great Tree to sprout once again and unite the worlds. Yuan kept up his position as one of the heads of Cruxis to give the Renegades an advantage. He also realized he would need the Eternal Sword to beat Mithos, and began plotting to kill Kratos since his life was tied to Origin's seal.
Reincarnated History What happened to your character that got them to this point in their normal, human life?
Yuan's birth mother was an immigrant from China and his father was a student from Sweden who was going to school in California on a visa. They were never married, and despite knowing she was pregnant, Yuan's father returned to Sweden after he graduated and never contacted his mother again. As luck would have it, he was born on February 29, 1976. His mother could barely support herself as it was, and a few months after he was born she put him in the care of an orphanage, hoping he would be adopted.
As an infant, it wasn't too difficult to find him a home. He was soon taken in and eventually adopted by Robert and Cynthia Kaufman. Despite living in California and being after the heat of the Civil Rights movement, many of their friends and family questioned them taking in a child that was obviously of some Chinese decent, especially during the Cold War. Eventually, Robert took a job on the East Coast to try to start anew with less judgement because people could assume they had to take him from a relative.
However, when Yuan was six, Robert was laid off from his job and had trouble finding more work. He started drinking more often to try to numb the stress. The longer he went without a job, the more he drank. Eventually he would come home completely intoxicated and would abuse both Cynthia and Yuan. One day, his teacher spotted suspicious bruises and called the police. Yuan was taken out of their home and given to the care of the state.
The experience left Yuan bitter and his behavior deteriorated. While he didn't do anything that could have got him arrested, he would get into fights at school and many verbal arguments with his foster families. He would often defy their requests or rules as well, which led to him being in five different homes along the East Coast until he was finally 18. By this point, he had been living in Locke City and managed to graduate from high school on track despite all the extenuating circumstances. Once he had his degree, he was eager to head out on his own, and his final foster family was perfectly willing to let him go.
He tried to support himself by working at a grocery store, but after a year he realized this couldn't last long. He had managed to save up enough to attend a police academy. After completing it, he searched for a job for a few months and eventually managed to get in with the Locke City police when he was 20. The next five years went comparatively well for him, and he was unaware of the corruption in the police force. Toward the end of that time, he got engaged to a girl he had been familiar with for a while and had eventually fallen for.
But, as the luck of this particular soul would have it, this didn't last. His fiancée went missing, and Yuan was eventually informed that all evidence showed that she was dead although a body hadn't been produced. This was a huge blow to Yuan, and once the initial grief wore off, during his spare time he began investigating her case on his own. The more digging he did, the more he began to realize that there was more going on in this police force than met the eye. He wasn't able to get all of the details about the corruption, especially since he figured out enough to know that digging too much more would likely get him killed. He continued working for them until he was 28 when his conscience could bear it no more and he resigned, claiming it was because he felt like he needed to move on from everything that reminded him of his fiancée.
He didn't leave the city, however. He still had a case to solve there, because he wanted to know if his fiancée was really dead and who had killed her. No longer being affiliated with the police force put him at a disadvantage in digging up more details. Eight years ago, he began working as a private investigator in hopes that some day, he would manage to find something that would help him. Besides, he was still a police officer at heart so working along those lines still fit him best. To this day, he continues to do PI work in the city.
